Secret gardeners in Harwich have handed more than £4,000 to good causes after opening their private gardens to visitors over the summer.

The charities to benefit from this year’s Harwich Secret Gardens open day include the Ark Family Resource Centre, Home Start Harwich, Harwich Electric Palace, NEST, the Salvation Army and Harwich Social Stroke Group.

There were also two large planters for the St Nicholas’ Church, £600 for the churchyard and £100 worth of daffodil bulbs for local planting.

Frances Vincent, chairman for Harwich Secret Gardens, said: “ I would like to thank Bev and Nigel for allowing us to use their lovely space for the presentation and also for being gardeners.

“The many advertisers who support us in paying for the programme which allows all the income from the programme to go to good causes.”

She added: “Gardens are such an important part of life and not everyone has access to one, so it is a privilege to be able to display our gardens for others to enjoy.

“It is well documented that access to an open space and gardens is important to health and well-being.

“Over the last 13 years, we have donated in excess of £25,000 and many local good causes have benefitted from this.”
