The Electric Palace Cinema – one of the UK’s oldest Grade II* Listed cinemas – has been undergoing a series of important renovations, funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund. But during early 2019, asbestos debris was found on site and a struggle to find additional funding began.

Last year Historic England certified that the cinema was in dire need of restoration work, putting it on the Heritage at Risk Register. With some extra funding coming from the trust, things are looking up for the historic picture-house, however the project is still short of the full amount needed to bring this Harwich attraction and community asset back to full glory.
