Milsom Hotels & Restaurants announce the opening of Deck 1853 in Harwich, a vibrant new addition to the Ha’penny Pier, one of Britain’s oldest piers.
Deck 1853 will be managed and overseen by The Pier team, and is an exciting deviation for the group, as we embrace a new frontier and enter the takeaway business.
Eat-in, eat-out, or takeaway with a menu suitable for Grab & Go, served in recyclable and compostable packaging. The menu includes mouth-watering Neapolitan-style pizza, classic pasta dishes, sandwiches, baguettes, and paninis. Deck 1853 also has an ice cream hatch, due to open later this summer, serving Italian Gelato & classic soft-serve ice cream, as well as Paddy & Scott’s coffee and snacks – including dog-friendly ice cream too.
Deck 1853 has indoor seating for up to 24, and the stylish renovation and new look created by Geraldine Milsom incorporates key colours from the Milsom Hotels colour palette, but also nods to the seaside and maritime surroundings. There is plenty of outside seating and benches on the Ha’penny Pier to enjoy refreshments under the golden glow of summer days or the warming hues of sunset evenings. Even from the inside, you can enjoy far-reaching views along the Stour & Orwell estuaries.
This seaside spot is the perfect destination for walkers, sailing enthusiasts, visitors and locals, when meeting friends, exploring Historic Harwich or before setting sail. Deck 1853 is located adjacent to the Harwich foot ferry, which nicely links Harwich to the Shotley Peninsula & Felixstowe as a fun day trip from Suffolk.
Deck 1853 was previously known as Cafe on the Pier and was acquired following discussions with Christian Zeeman of Harwich Harbour Ferry, who previously operated the business since 2021.
The name ‘Deck 1853’ itself evokes nostalgia, harkening back to the Ha’penny Pier’s construction in 1853, named after the ½d (half an old penny) toll that was charged, and its legacy as a bustling departure point for paddle steamers during WWI.
